Nigeria’s tertiary educational sector has now been almost totally shut down with the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, making good their threat to begin an indefinite strike.
The strike has now started, with effect from 4 October.
ASUP president, Chibuzor Asumogba told newsmen:
“Yes, of course, the strike has begun today (Friday). It’s still going on and no turning back till the Federal Government listens to us and attend to our needs; none has been satisfactorily met,” he said.
ASUP wants the Federal Government to end the dichotomy between HND/University graduates in placement and career progression; setting up of governing councils for polytechnics; a white paper on visitation panels to polytechnics and a much-needed assessment of polytechnics.
The polytechnic lecturers had gone on similar strike earlier this year for three months. they called off the strike on July 16 after the intervention of federal lawmakers.
The strike by university lecturers is in its fourth month. Negotiations to resolve the impasse have failed.
ASUU wants a full implementation of the 2009 agreement they had with the federal government.
